Debt Collector Harassment in Minnesota

Complaints against debt collectors are at an all time high, reports the Minneapolis/St. Paul Star Tribune - people are fighting back, and winning.

In August, a Wayata, MN based debt collector was ordered out of business.

The debt collector allegedly threatened, "I will come to your home and get the money out of you" and "hunt you down like a dog if you don't send me money now." The debt collector also threatened to contact every financial institution the debtor did business with and have the debtor's professional license taken away (which the debt collector cannot do).

The debt collector may also face fines over $60,000.

Many people today face similar situations in which debt collectors use illegal practices to extract money for a debt owed. Often desperate, people on the receiving end of threats, like the one above, suffer mentally and physically.

The FDCPA - the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act - provides avenues through which people can fight back. This federal law sets the rules that debt collectors must follow when they attempt to collect a consumer debt. Unfortunately, debt collectors - again and again - knowingly violate this law. Why? The answer is money; the collection industry is a profitable one. Some debt collectors bank on a person being unaware of their rights under the FDCPA. Others know some people are unable to fight back themselves.

The attorneys at JohnstonMartineau, P.L.L.P. do fight back against debt collectors who break the law.

Updated and EXPANDED website!

JohnstonMartineau P.L.L.P. is releasing an updated website in the coming months!

Our new website will have the same great look and same great features like the free "Do I have a Claim" form. But the update will have some big additions.

Additions will include more information on areas like car crashes, minor settlements, work injuries, and what to do after an accident.

The expansion will also include information on Fair Debt Collection claims. We are excited to help those who have been, and currently are, being bullied by debt collectors. See our website for more information:

Debt collectors must play by the rules when collecting a debt...rules that are in place to PROTECT YOU!

Federal law lays out these rules and regulate what debt collectors can and cannot do. Congress determined in 1978 that there is an abundant use abusive, deceptive, and unfair debt collection practices by many debt collectors. These abusive practices contribute to the number of personal bankruptcies, to marital instability, to the loss of jobs, and to invasions of individual privacy.
15 U.S.C. 1692.

See our website or call for more information about Fair Debt Collection (FDCPA) claims and personal injury claims. Check back here for the new website launch date!

Sincerely,
JohnstonMartineau P.L.L.P.
